  • His positive attitude has fueled an extraordinary 75-year career.
  • Van Dyke cherishes both his achievements and the fans he’s inspired.

Legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke will celebrate his 100th birthday on December 13, and shows no signs of slowing down. Even now, he says acting remains his source of joy and fulfillment.

“I don’t want to. I mean, it’s my hobby. It’s my life. I love it,” he shared in a recent interview, revealing that he’s not considering retirement any time soon.

For now, Van Dyke is promoting his new book, “100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life,” a fitting project for someone whose life and work are a testament to happiness and hope.

“I’ve decided people are born with a certain personality and a certain outlook, a certain perspective,” says Van Dyke. “I tend to look on the good side of things.”

His rise began with Broadway’s “Bye Bye Birdie,” where the encouragement he received from co-star Chita Rivera helped him find his talents as both a singer and dancer.

“Chita (Rivera) was so sweet and nice, knowing that I didn’t dance. She was patient. And she also helped me sing because I wasn’t a singer either. I had to learn a lot fast,” recalls Van Dyke.

His performance brought him a Tony Award and launched a series of career-defining roles, including the beloved “Mary Poppins,” where, alongside Julie Andrews, he created unforgettable moments cherished by generations.

“To this day, (people) come up and start singing that song,” says Van Dyke, referring to the film’s enduring musical numbers.

From earning multiple Emmy awards for “The Dick Van Dyke Show” to starring in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” he has left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.

Modern-day stars like Chris Martin and Michelle Obama have expressed admiration, reflecting the lasting impact of Van Dyke’s cheerful spirit. “It’s wonderful,” he says of the love he’s received.

Van Dyke looks back with gratitude on a career that spans more than 75 years, feeling fortunate to have turned his passion into a lifelong pursuit. “I’m speaking from an advantageous position, I got to do for a living what I would have done for nothing,” he says.

While he jokes about roles missed—including a chance to play James Bond and working with Cary Grant—he remains upbeat, embracing his journey and looking forward to new opportunities, saying, “I always wanted to play ‘Scrooge.’ I could do it. It’s just November. I’ve still got time.”

Van Dyke’s story is a glowing reminder that staying positive and nurturing your passions can lead to a lifetime of happiness and connection with others.
