Discover Joy In Every Step On Holiday
Quick Smiles:
- Gentle walking holidays bring lasting health benefits
- Exercise in beautiful places boosts mood and motivation
- Staying active can be fun, social, and stress-free
A little movement can go a long way, especially as we grow older. Staying active is key for feeling good and keeping independence, and there’s a wonderful way to combine fitness with fun: walking holidays. More and more, people are finding that gentle exercise paired with refreshing scenery creates memorable and uplifting experiences.
For many, the thought of getting older stirs mixed feelings. It’s natural to notice changes in our bodies over the years. Yet, a recent survey found that most adults in their 50s and 60s worry about staying healthy as they age, and many are concerned about losing independence. Thankfully, exercise doesn’t have to mean hours at the gym. It can be as simple as taking regular walks—wherever life leads you!
As Dr. Paddy Dempsey from the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition explains, “Some decline is natural, especially after our 30s, but a surprising amount is actually down to changes in lifestyle – especially becoming less active. Our muscles, heart, lungs and even balance systems respond really well to being used.” He reassures that inactivity often happens gradually, but the more we move, the more we gain back.
That’s why campaigns like Act Now, Age Better encourage everyone to “move better for a later life.” Even small daily changes, like choosing the stairs, standing up after sitting, or doing a bit of gardening, can work wonders. “You don’t have to train like an athlete: walking more, climbing stairs, making sure you stand up after sitting for a while, a little gardening – they all help,” Dr. Dempsey says.
Turning exercise into something you truly enjoy is the secret to making it stick. For Sarah Fussey, marketing director at a walking holiday company, it’s all about discovering beautiful landscapes and taking things at your own pace. “If you enjoy yourself as you move, it doesn’t really feel like exercise – but you’ll reap the benefits all the same,” she shares. You don’t need to power-walk—instead, imagine wandering through vineyards or along sunny coastlines, letting each step add to your health and happiness.
Walking holidays are also designed for all ages and abilities. Longtime customer Peter Charlesworth highlights the joy of feeling secure on well-marked routes: “You’re never going to get lost, and you can go on your own and at your own pace.” Having assistance with luggage makes everything “stress-free walking,” he adds. “You don’t have to be super fit, but it really helps keep a base level to your fitness.”
Stepping out into nature brings more than just physical perks. Studies show that exercising outdoors can lift your spirits, ease stress, and support mental wellness. “If you enjoy it, you’ll keep at it.” Simple and true. Whether you prefer cycling, yoga in your living room, or a gentle hike through rolling hills, finding pleasure in movement makes all the difference.
Finally, proof comes from those who keep doing what they love. Take Ralph, for example, who played cricket into his 80s— purely because he loved it. When you move in a way that brings you joy, you’re treating your mind and body to a brighter, healthier future.
So why not try ambling through a meadow, strolling by the sea, or simply walking in your local park? Every step you take for yourself is a celebration of life and a beautiful reason to smile.
