Dog’s Unusually Long Tongue Gets In The Way Of His Adoption, His New Mom Says He’s Perfect

  • A dog has been staying at a shelter for five months already as would-be adopters do not like his unusually long tongue.
  • New mom thinks his wild tongue is just perfect.
  • The dog is now named Don Pepe and lives in London while making other people smile and laugh with his goofy tongue.

People have been passing up an affectionate dog just because he has a long tongue that sticks out of his mouth.  He only has two teeth left that is why keeping his tongue inside his mouth is difficult for him.

Fortunately, Khaya Castagnoli, thinks his wild tongue is adorable.  And she ended the dog’s five-month stay at the shelter by adopting him and named him Don Pepe.

Don Pepe now lives with his mom in London. He may not have control over his tongue but he has learned to live his best life with it.  Or at least find ways to go around it.  But there are times it can get blown by the wind or end up in funny positions.

Castagnoli said, “Sometimes I swear it seems like he waves with his tongue, but whether this is voluntary or involuntary, I’m not sure. He does give licks still, so he does have some control over it.”

Castagnoli added that Don Pepe sometimes struggles when he eats peas as it rolls around too much.  But for most food, he has no problem managing it.  “His tongue is out pretty much all the time. I only ever see it go in when he barks (which is very rare)! I think it’s an effort for him to hold it in as he only has two teeth left,” Castagnoli explained.

What others saw as a fault is turning out as a thing of joy for others.  They see Don Pepe’s tongue as goofy and it makes them smile and laugh.

Castagnoli happily relates, “He definitely cheers people up — you can’t look at him and not smile. A lot of children ask if they can touch his tongue, they’re enchanted by it. Some don’t [recognize] him as a dog but think he’s some creature they’ve never heard of. They ask why his tongue is always out — it’s a good opportunity to talk about animal rescue.”

So, you see, judging dogs by their outer appearance would only make you miss the opportunity to know them well.
