Faithful Dog Guides Injured Owner To Safety

When Jacob Schmitt ventured into Utah’s Uinta Mountains for a hunting trip, he didn’t expect his dog’s loyalty would become his lifeline.

The 34-year-old’s vehicle lost control on a narrow trail, plunging off a cliff and rolling several times.

Thrown from the vehicle, Jacob was left with a broken leg, two fractured ankles, and several broken ribs.

His phone and radio were lost in the chaos, leaving him stranded and injured.

Jacob’s German short-haired pointer, Buddy, had been riding securely in the back and emerged from the wreck unharmed.

“He was sort of just there staring at me without a scratch,” Jacob said. “It almost makes me emotional.”

With daylight fading, Jacob splinted his own leg and began a painful crawl through the darkness.

Buddy stayed faithfully by his side, his glowing collar lighting the way and giving Jacob hope.

“The thing that loves you unconditionally is just there, essentially. And he keeps checking on you. It’s like the biggest spirit jump,” he said.

After crawling all night for 11 hours, Jacob reached his vehicle and managed to drive to a diner.

A kind woman there called 911 and waited with him until first responders arrived, who soon ensured both Jacob and Buddy were safe.

Jacob spent four days in the hospital, and is now healing comfortably at home with Buddy still loyally by his side.

He credits his furry friend for helping him press on through a night he’ll never forget.
