  • An innovative angling program is now prescribed by doctors to support mental health in England.
  • The initiative, Tackling Minds, recently received the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
  • More than 2,300 people have benefited from the free equipment, coaching, and peer support it provides.

After finding recovery and hope through fishing, Dave Lyons founded Tackling Minds to help others navigate mental health challenges. His group, now partnered with the UK’s National Health Service, enables medical professionals to prescribe fishing as a remedy for anxiety and depression.

National recognition came when Tackling Minds received the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest honor of its kind, presented by King Charles. “I’m just ecstatic!” said Dave Lyons, expressing heartfelt pride for the group and its volunteers.

“If it wasn’t for fishing I don’t think I’d be here,” he shared.

Since its start, over 2,300 individuals have been referred to the program, receiving coaching and equipment free of charge. Every session ensures fish are safely released, while trained coaches and support workers create a welcoming environment for all.

The idea has sparked excitement for potential nationwide adoption as part of the NHS’s social prescribing initiative. These personalized referrals include activities such as museum visits, poetry, and nature excursions, proven to boost overall wellbeing.

Tackling Minds’ dedicated coaches and volunteers make a lasting impact in communities around Lancashire and beyond. “People we’ve worked with have said it’s saved their lives. That’s huge for me, it’s what keeps me going,” shared Dave, reflecting on the positive feedback from participants.

A special royal thank you arrived when Buckingham Palace announced the group’s prestigious award, filling Dave and his family with pride. He plans to dedicate the achievement to the late Ricky Hatton, a friend and ambassador who inspired many through his advocacy for mental health.

“He worked so hard helping people with their mental health, and I just know how proud he would have been of me, the family, and the group,” Dave added.

With over 50 volunteers, Tackling Minds is expanding its reach to touch more lives with the calming power of fishing. The ripple effect of this program continues to spread hope and healing across the country.

Stay tuned for more inspiring stories and remember to share these good vibes with someone who could use a smile!
