  • A woman who once disliked dogs now travels the world with her canine companion, Butch.
  • Heike Pirngruber and Butch have explored over 104 countries together, embracing life on the road.
  • The duo’s adventures span from the Americas to Europe, with plans to continue eastward.

Heike Pirngruber, once a dedicated camerawoman in Germany, decided to trade her stable career for a life of exploration. Over the past 12 years, she’s journeyed through more than 104 countries, experiencing the world in a way few can imagine.

Her travels took an unexpected turn when she met Butch, an Australian cattle dog, in a beach hut in Baja, California.

Despite her initial aversion to dogs, a gentle stray named Max, along with his two companions, softened her heart.

This newfound openness paved the way for Butch’s entrance into her life.

“I never really liked dogs when I was a kid, but the first moment I had little Butch in my arms and knew he was mine now, I couldn’t believe how I felt,” Pirngruber shared.

Butch, chosen from a litter of seven neglected puppies, became her steadfast companion.

Together, they embarked on a three-year adventure across the Americas, experiencing the vast landscapes of the US, Mexico, and South America.

“He’s my best friend, I love this guy to death and it’s awesome,” Pirngruber expressed fondly.

The duo’s modes of travel have been as varied as the landscapes they’ve traversed, from motorbikes in Arizona to tuk-tuks in Chile and Argentina.

“We’ve seen amazing places and scenery, and because Butch had the back seat in the tuk-tuk, he could sit in the shade or the sun—I think he really enjoyed that,” she recalled.

Their journey continued across the Atlantic to Europe, with stops in Spain, Andorra, France, and Italy.

Pirngruber’s spontaneous nature means their travel plans remain flexible, with future destinations including Albania, Turkey, and potentially India or Mongolia.

“I choose where we go mainly day by day. There are times when we want to get away from civilization and be by ourselves, and then other times I’m sitting at a square trying to get some contact with others, either in person or through my phone,” Pirngruber explained.

Her minimalist approach to travel allows her to focus on the experiences and cultures she encounters along the way.

“I love culture, I love to understand the planet. I just carry the basics, I go ultralight, I carry my camera and my first aid kit and Butch’s medicines so he’s protected from ticks and the like.”

Despite the challenges of solo travel, Pirngruber finds the world to be a generally welcoming place.

“And 99% of people are nice and overall, I’ve had some great encounters with people, even though there have been some bad experiences and moments as a solo female traveler. It’s a safe world to travel in, in general.”

Her journey with Butch is a testament to the unexpected joys that life on the road can bring.
