Green and Golden Bell Frogs Make Triumphant Return

Quick Smiles:

  • Green and golden bell frogs are returning to Canberra’s wetlands after years of decline.
  • Over 300 frogs bred in captivity are being released, aided by innovative “frog saunas.”
  • Scientists hope these efforts will quickly boost frog populations in their natural habitats.

The green and golden bell frog is making a comeback around Canberra after populations dwindled due to a damaging fungus. Conservationists at the University of Canberra bred these frogs in captivity and are now releasing them in groups to specially prepared ponds and wetlands, hoping to restore the species.

The frogs have been immunized against the fungus and will also benefit from “frog saunas”—warm shelters designed to fight the disease.

180 of these saunas have been installed, offering ideal conditions for the frogs to thrive and stay healthy.

Each female can lay thousands of eggs, giving hope that the population will rise quickly, even though the offspring will still need protection from the fungus.

“The pathogen itself is quite susceptible to elevated temperature—it doesn’t like temperatures over 25C; 27 or 28C is quite lethal to it,” Clulow told the Guardian.

Beyond the frog saunas, scientists selected relocation sites called ‘frog spas’ with warm, slightly salty water, giving the frogs even more support as they settle back into the wild.

The project aims for about 200 frogs in each of the 15 ponds, igniting new hope for this remarkable Australian species.
