Quick Smiles:

  • A dedicated gardener turns disappointment into triumph with an enormous zucchini
  • Determination and tender care help break a North American record
  • Community cheers for a joyful win that restores faith in perseverance

Sarah Whitty’s love for gardening runs deep. After last year’s zucchini was disqualified over a tiny split, she returned with even greater resolve.

Her careful pruning, feeding, and protective measures paid off in a spectacular way. The result was a jaw-dropping 170-pound zucchini that shattered the previous North American record by seven pounds.

“After planting three plants, two marrows split, leaving just one. Then a Nor’easter dumped 5 inches of rain on her patch. Sarah covered the entire plant with a tarp and eventually had to cut off three-quarters of the plant to prevent sudden growth surges that could trigger a last-minute split,” the Facebook post explains. “But the marrow held strong. It came in at 170 pounds, a full 7 pounds over the previous North American record!”

Friends and strangers alike celebrated her perseverance. “Secretariat!!! We made it, guys. I learned so much about giant fruit gardening through this baby. I feel safe in saying that Sarah worked HARD for this win!!” one fan wrote.

Another admirer echoed the sentiment: “YEEEESSSSS!!! I’ve never been so invested in a Zucchini as we’ve all watched her stress over the last week !!! CONGRATS SARAH!”

Even those who had never met Sarah found themselves cheering. “YESSSSSS! I’m so thrilled for her. All the strangers on the internet are invested,” a viewer shared.
