Heartwarming Walk Down The Aisle Brings Tears and Cheers
Quick Smiles:
- Frankie defies expectations to walk his mom down the aisle.
- Five years of determination and training on a special machine.
- A wedding day filled with smiles, tears, and applause.
There wasn’t a single dry eye as young Frankie Penfold took his first steps down the aisle at his mom’s wedding.
The magic of the moment wasn’t just in his adorable outfit or his radiant smile. It was the incredible journey he embarked on to make this walk possible.
Frankie, only 10 years old, was born with SUCLA-2 mitochondrial depletion syndrome. This genetic disorder affects brain development, leaving him unable to walk or hold his head up, and mildly deaf.
His parents, Hannah and Tom, were told Frankie might not live beyond his teenage years. Hannah confessed, “It was really heartbreaking, and something I’ll never get over.”
In his early months, Frankie was diagnosed with hearing loss and soon began missing developmental milestones. A series of tests confirmed the SUCLA-2 diagnosis just before his first birthday.
The tests also revealed that both Hannah and Tom had passed on faulty gene copies to Frankie. Doctors informed them that their son would likely never sit up, crawl, or walk.
“It was massively eye-opening,” Hannah shared. “As much as you try to live a normal life, there are barriers up, all the time.”
Despite these challenges, Hannah and Frankie set an ambitious goal: to walk down the aisle together at her wedding to Tom. Frankie began intensive sessions at Gympanzees, a Bristol-based organization for disabled children.
His favorite was a machine called the Upsy, which allowed him to stand upright and walk with assistance. “Frankie literally got in it, stood up for the first time—and his eyes just beamed,” his mother remembered.
For five years, Frankie trained with determination on the Upsy. On the wedding day in 2023, he successfully walked his mom down the aisle, with his siblings Penelope and Teddy following.
“He worked so hard, and on my wedding day in 2023, he managed to do it,” Hannah said. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house—I’ll never forget that moment, for the rest of my life.”
The day was filled with smiles, tears, and cheers from everyone present. “People were smiling and crying and clapping the whole time,” she recalled.
The experience created precious memories and highlighted the incredible achievement of Frankie’s walk. His journey is a testament to perseverance and the power of love and support.
