Hoda Kotb has shared beautiful ways she approaches the topic of adoption with her daughters, Haley and Hope, as they get older and ask questions.

“You weren’t born in my tummy, you were born in my heart,”

which her daughters happily accepted at the time.

As her children grew, Hoda took care to explain further, telling them,

“Well actually, you came from another person’s tummy, and so did you.”

She introduced the idea of a “birth mother angel” and told her daughters,

“God gave her the job to carry you so that she could give you to me. That was her job.”

Her daughters responded with curiosity and warmth about their birth mother angel.

She writes about sharing her experiences with country music star Thomas Rhett, noting how his family is also openly talking about adoption with their children.

Thomas Rhett said,

“Adoption is one of the most beautiful things in the world, and I don’t think at the beginning of it you think, ‘In six years I’m going to have to start answering some really intense questions.’”

He also shared,

“We try to be as honest as we can without the confusion.”
