Iowa Family’s Magical Encounter with Rare Albino Deer Pair

Quick Smiles:
- A family in Iowa experienced an extraordinary wildlife moment, spotting two rare albino deer.
- The odds of seeing such a pair are estimated at 1 in 400 million.
- Albino deer are protected from hunting due to their genetic rarity and striking appearance.
While meandering through the serene landscape of rural Iowa at dusk, Kurt Massimilla and his family stumbled upon a sight that most could only dream of witnessing.
They encountered not one, but two rare albino deer, a spectacle that is said to have a staggering 1 in 400 million chance of happening.
This magical moment unfolded five weeks ago as they were returning from a birthday celebration for their 13-year-old son.
Kurt shared, “We were driving home just at dusk on this back road and all of a sudden, my wife was like, ‘Oh my God, an albino deer!’ Just the tone in her voice…she was like a giddy teenager.”
Initially, Kurt mistook the deer for something else entirely.
“I actually saw it, and I thought it was like a white llama or something like that.”
Curiosity took over, and he decided to reverse the car for a better look.
“So I put on the brakes and backed up, and there were two of them out in the field just hanging out,” he explained.
The phenomenon of albinism in deer is a genetic mutation that results in a complete lack of pigmentation, making these creatures stand out vividly against their natural backdrop.
Due to their rarity and vulnerability, hunting albino deer is prohibited in Iowa and several other states.
Interestingly, sightings of albino deer pairs have been reported in Iowa before, in both 2020 and 2023.
Albinism occurs roughly once in every 30,000 deer births, while leucism, another condition causing white coloration, can also result in deer with white patches or entirely white coats.
Kurt, who relocated to Iowa from Arizona, cherishes moments like these.
“We’re big wildlife enthusiasts, so it was kind of neat to see. We love seeing animals that you typically don’t see on the beaten trail.”
For those eager to witness this enchanting encounter, the family captured the excitement in a video, which is brimming with the thrill of the moment.
Feel free to share this wonder of nature with fellow enthusiasts on social media and spread the joy of these “unicorns” of the wild.

You know albino deer are actually not all that rare. Argon labs has had a whole herd of them for years. And Boulder Junction, WI has a lot too.
