Japanese Towns Turn Diapers Into Recycled Materials

Faced with overflowing landfills in the 1990s, the Japanese municipalities of Shibushi and Osaki transformed their waste management into a world-leading recycling system. Today, these towns recycle a remarkable 80% of their household waste, which is four times the national average in Japan.
The newest frontier in their efforts involves tackling dirty diapers, a complex waste stream that typically consumes vast amounts of landfill space. Working with the company Unicharm, residents now sort used diapers into bags for specialized collection and recycling.
“Ultimately, our top priority is to reduce our trash and extend the life of the landfill,”
Kenichi Matsunaga, an environment official for the city of Shibushi, told the Japan Times.
The recycling process uses ozone gas to thoroughly sterilize and deodorize the material, ensuring it meets strict sanitary requirements. This advanced system shreds the diapers to separate plastic, pulp, and polymers for a second life.
While the recycled fibers were once used for toilet paper, the technology has progressed enough to incorporate the pulp back into the manufacturing of new diapers. Japan now aims to have 100 cities adopt similar diaper recycling initiatives by 2030.
Quick Smiles:
- Residents in Shibushi and Osaki currently recycle 80% of all household waste.
- New technology uses ozone gas to fully sanitize and deodorize diaper pulp for reuse.
- Japan aims to expand this innovative recycling model to 100 cities by 2030.
This breakthrough offers a sustainable solution for a high-volume waste product while preserving precious land. It serves as a hopeful blueprint for how communities can turn environmental challenges into innovative circular economies.
