Large Dog Overcomes Anxiety With Help From Miniature Dachshund

  • Arnold the Weimaraner suffered from anxiety and depression.
  • His human mom thought that adopting a smaller dog would help in overcoming Arnold’s anxiety.
  • The small dog’s confidence and braveness has rubbed off on the much bigger dog and healed his anxiety and depression.

We have heard of people with anxiety and depression finding emotional support from dogs.  But dogs need emotional support, too!

Carolyn Manalis of Perth, Australia was thinking of a way to help her Weimaraner Arnold deal with his anxiety.

Arnold developed anxiety and depression at an early age.  He suffered from separation anxiety and a run-in with a German shepherd made it even worse.  He gets so stressed out whenever he leaves the house and going to the park leaves him shaking and even more fearful of other dogs.

So it was Carolyn’s mission to find a way to heal Arnold.

Good thing that Carolyn’s friend had a miniature dachshund up for adoption.  Carolyn hoped that if she found a companion for Arnold, this would be the solution to Arnold’s anxiety.

And it was an instant connection from the moment that the two dogs met. Carolyn cannot be any happier. “Frank has helped Arnold regain his confidence to be able to play and wrestle while learning that this doesn’t always mean he’s going to get hurt or attacked. Having a little friend to play with has been the perfect therapy for Arnold to heal,” said Carolyn.

In spite of Frank’s size, his confidence and lack of fear has helped Arnold to also be brave.

Frank, who is 66 pounds lighter than Arnold, makes Arnold act like a father to the tiny pooch.  Arnold even helped in house training Frank and showed him the ropes of being part of the family.

As Carolyn said, “The bond these two dogs have is just insanely beautiful. They are so connected and loving and supportive of one another. If one ever cries, the other one is there in half a second to check they are OK. Their love is unconditional, regardless of their size or breed.”

There really is no limit to the love and comfort that dogs can give— to humans or another dog.
