The latest season of “Law & Order” begins exactly where last season’s dramatic events ended, with major challenges for ADA Samantha Maroun. After Carter Mills’ shocking acquittal and subsequent death, familiar faces face new dilemmas and character growth.

Odelya Halevi shares her enthusiasm for portraying a more complex side of Maroun, embracing the chance to reveal her character’s grey areas.

“I think at the end of the day, I love playing — finally playing or showing — a side of Maroun that is maybe a bit more dark and not all out there,” she says, “because I think that she’s very opinionated and very emotional. And it’s all out there. She doesn’t hide it.

“And it’s the first time that we are seeing her really dark, really on the gray human side.”

Co-star Hugh Dancy adds, “And concealing things, potentially.”

This season, tension between Maroun and EADA Nolan Price lingers as mistrust becomes a central theme. Price’s decision to honor strict legal processes impacts both his relationship with Maroun and the ongoing investigation.

Tony Goldwyn, who plays DA Nicholas Baxter, says, “I had urged, as gently as I can, Nolan to not be so narrow in his view, to think with empathy. And we’re really seeing the consequences of his not doing that.”

Price’s commitment to the letter of the law is tested, especially when he must report Maroun’s role in witness identification. These choices add emotional depth and realism to the characters’ interactions.

Goldwyn reflects, “I can’t help but judge Nolan for his rigidity, because the consequences are so stark. That’s an interesting kind of wrinkle in our relationship.”

Hugh Dancy observes, “I feel like it’s surprisingly difficult to step outside of your own, from outside of your own perspective, and see anything a little bit differently. We all think that we’re really open-minded, but actually, we’re mostly blinking.”

Dancy appreciates how characters are pushed out of their comfort zones and must view justice from new angles.

As Maroun faces questions about her innocence, Halevi admits, “If she did it, I like her. If she didn’t do it, I like her. I think being guilty and being likable … could go together.”

“Could be compatible,” Dancy agrees.

The latest episode’s closing moments focus on Price reevaluating his sense of justice. He overhears a revealing conversation with Maroun and Julia, a lawyer and Mills’ girlfriend, who confesses her fears and motivation for her actions.

Julia’s confession provides a pivotal moment, with Maroun ultimately advising discretion. “Just because we can win the case based on a letter of the law, doesn’t mean we need to,” Maroun points out.

Price appreciates her honesty, and both characters chart a new course for seeking justice through compassion and understanding.

Halevi believes her character reaches Price emotionally and causes him to “explore the law from a different angle,” echoing the season’s themes of compassion, empathy, and personal growth.
