Lost Dog Reunites With Family After Five Years

Quick Smiles:

  • Choco the dog returned home after 5 years away, just in time for the holidays.
  • His family had expanded, but he quickly reclaimed his favorite spot on the couch.
  • Generous strangers and spirited volunteers helped make his journey back possible.

A small pup named Choco found his way back to his family in California right before Christmas after being missing for half a decade. His family, especially Patricia, remained hopeful throughout his long absence and never stopped searching.

Choco was found chained to a fence in Detroit, more than 2,000 miles from his original home, and was identified thanks to his microchip. The dedicated team at Helping Paws and Claws, along with Lincoln Park Animal Shelter, coordinated his rescue and return journey.

“Shocked,” Patricia described herself as being when she listened to the message on her answering machine.

A stranger named Pamela donated her airline miles to help a volunteer fly Choco home, making the reunion possible. After many years apart, Choco was welcomed back into his expanded family with open arms, plenty of hugs, and happy tears.

“Microchip your dogs,” Patricia said. “With the holidays and the extreme cold, a story like mine can be your story next.”

Spread some joy and hope by sharing this extraordinary homecoming with friends and family!
