Jacob Schmitt was thrown from a side-by-side after it tumbled down a cliff in Utah’s Uinta Mountains, leaving him with multiple fractures.
His German short-haired pointer, Buddy, stayed nearby and the pair began a painful, 11-hour descent when Jacob’s phone and radio were gone.
“He was sort of just there staring at me without a scratch,” Jacob said.
“The thing that loves you unconditionally is just there, essentially. And he keeps checking on you.”
“It’s like the biggest spirit jump,” he said.
By sunrise Jacob reached his vehicle, a diner patron called 911, and first responders took him to the hospital for four days before he returned home to recover.
