Chamar Studio, based in the slums of Mumbai, is making waves by transforming discarded tyres into fashionable accessories and furniture loved by celebrities.

The collective, founded by Sudheer Rajbhar, empowers Dalit artisans—historically marginalized and once limited to leatherwork—by providing them creative roles and fair pay while promoting sustainability.

“Growing up in Mumbai slums, I used to be cursed as ‘Chamar,’” says Rajbhar.

“Today I embrace the word that once degraded me, using my art.”

Facing challenges after leather bans, Rajbhar and his team turned to recycled rubber, crafting cruelty-free products that are durable and waterproof.

Artisans like Rohan Kumar share that working with Chamar Studio means both respect and stable income, with pieces now featured in international exhibitions and galleries.

“Employment here means more than income; it offers dignity, visibility and long-term community growth,” says Kumar.

Chamar Studio’s global recognition, highlighted by Rihanna’s viral moment at Design Miami, shows how art can foster equality and change perspectives.

“We want Dalit identity to be visible in galleries, in museums, and in the global imagination,” Rajbhar affirms.
