  • An anonymous letter shamed the Pascucci family for leaving their Christmas decorations on.
  • Sara Pascucci posted a reply on her group’s Facebook page detailing that it was her father who put up the decorations and he just recently died from COVID-19.
  • Community and neighbors now plan to light up the neighborhood in honor of the Pascuccis and those who died from COVID-19.

A Long Island Family was still reeling from the deaths of a father and an aunt to COVID-19, when an anonymous, typed-out letter shamed them for leaving their Christmas lights up. “Take your Christmas lights down! It’s Valentine’s Day!!!!!!!,” it read.

It would not have bothered Sara Pascucci under normal circumstances but the pain of recently losing her loved ones made her post about it. Her post in the Long Island Moms Facebook group detailed how it pained her to read the note and hoped that whoever sent her the note would get to read her post.

She said, “A major blow to the heart… No one really knows what is going on inside the house or why we didn’t take down the decorations. I couldn’t believe someone would do this.”

Her father was the one who puts up the Christmas decorations yearly shortly after Thanksgiving.  With his death in January, it was hard to bring herself to take them down.

Pascucci wrote, “For anyone in the Bethpage area — if you know of a person who would do something so insensitive like this please pass along my message…. Our entire family was sick with COVID starting December 24th. Within this timeframe, we lost 2 family members. One being my father…

It was her Father’s pride and joy to make their house festive.  Last year, before he succumbed to COVID-19, he did it especially for his beloved 2-year-old grandson.

With the struggles that one has to face with deaths, hospital bills, funeral arrangements, and the overwhelming grief, taking the decors down was simply painful.

When her Facebook group and her local community got to read her post, they felt outraged.  That is when the outpouring of encouragement of support came. Meals, flowers, and cards were sent to their home.  A GoFundMe account was set up to help the family meet costs.

Neighbors have also redecorated their homes with Christmas ornaments in solidarity with the Pascucci family.  For Valentine’s day, the community plans to light up the whole area to honor the Pascucci family and all those who perished from COVID-19.

“I was completely floored and overwhelmed… I didn’t post it looking for pity. But people should think before doing things like this, especially right now with everything going on in the world.”

Pascucci now feels thankful for the letter.  She said, “I actually want to thank that person, for bringing me all this love and support in a time when I needed it most.”
