A fascinating deep-sea coral species has been discovered in the tropical western Pacific, earning the name Iridogorgia chewbacca after its resemblance to the iconic Star Wars character.

With its long, flexible, and furry-looking branches, the coral stands out as a remarkable find among underwater life.

Professor Les Watling of the University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa, co-author of the recent study, noticed this unusual coral while reviewing research from colleagues in China.

His past work in Hawaiʻi and collaborations with NOAA played key roles in confirming it as a distinct species.

“Seeing this coral for the first time was unforgettable,” Watling said in a UH press release.

“Its long, flexible branches and shape immediately reminded me of Chewbacca. Even after years of deep-sea work, discoveries like this still make me stop and take notice.”

The coral was first recorded in 2006, but it took further research and genetic analysis to confirm and formally describe it as a new species.
