New Project Creates 100,000 Green Jobs in India

A World Bank-funded initiative in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka aims to create 100,000 jobs, focusing on environmental conservation and sustainable growth along India’s central and southern coastlines.

The SHORE Project, with a $212 million investment, will train people for work in tourism, waste management, and fishing, while supporting the habitats of 18,000 species that rely on the Indian coast.

By collaborating with the private sector, the project will help mitigate plastic pollution and establish eco-friendly beaches that generate economic opportunities.

“This Project will help states tap into private sector sources to mitigate the impacts of plastic pollution and to foster eco-tourism in selected areas,” said Paul Procee, the World Bank’s Acting Country Director for India.

Additionally, 72,000 acres of biodiverse landscapes in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka will be conserved through mangrove planting, sand dune restoration, and coral protection efforts, benefitting wildlife like dugongs, turtles, and birds.

“This project will enhance measures in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka through public awareness campaigns on recycling and plastics leakage, as well as bridging the gap between urban local bodies and the private sector for solid waste management in cities. Reducing plastic pollution will benefit 120,000 people,” said Dinesh Aryal, Chabungbam Singh, and Avanish Kant, Task Team Leaders for the Program.
