Quick Smiles:

  • Over 8 million New York households are receiving inflation refund checks—some for the very first time.
  • No application required; eligible taxpayers will get up to $400 automatically.
  • Similar relief measures are being offered in Virginia, Georgia, and Alaska.

New York is sending out inflation refund checks to 8.2 million households, providing much-needed relief to residents statewide. Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, these checks—up to $400 each—are being mailed throughout October and November.

“Starting today, we’re sending inflation refund checks to over 8 million New Yorkers because it’s simple — this is your money and we’re putting it back in your pockets.”

The initiative aims to help families handle increased costs caused by inflation, with funds being distributed based on the most recent tax filings. Eligible recipients do not need to apply, as checks are sent automatically according to income level and filing status.

The one-time payments are calculated so joint filers earning up to $150,000 will receive $400, while other amounts are determined by filing status and income brackets. Mailings started on September 26 and will continue through November, arriving at the address listed on the latest tax return.

Other states are offering their own versions of relief: Virginia residents can receive up to $400 in tax rebates, Georgia is distributing refunds based on surplus funds, and Alaska continues its Permanent Fund Dividend program with $1,000 payouts from mineral royalties. Each program brings timely assistance to households navigating economic changes.

If you live in New York and meet the criteria, keep an eye on your mailbox—your refund is on its way!
