  • Record numbers of octopus spotted around British coasts
  • Divers and fishermen enjoy extraordinary sightings
  • Scientists investigate the reasons for this marine marvel

British seas are buzzing with excitement as octopus populations reach levels not seen since 75 years ago. With 2025 named the ‘Year of the Octopus,’ divers and fishermen are witnessing more sightings and catches than ever before.

Experts believe that milder winters may be contributing to this incredible increase, known as a ‘bloom,’ during octopus birthing seasons.

“It really has been exceptional,” says Matt Slater from the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

He adds, “We’ve seen octopuses jet-propelling themselves along. We’ve seen octopuses camouflaging themselves, they look just like seaweeds.”

This year’s harvest was remarkable, with catches soaring to twelve times higher than previous years. Despite the surge in octopus, populations of their main prey like lobsters and scallops remain steady.

Researchers are eager to learn if this is a rare event or if warmer winters will continue to support healthy octopus blooms.

The uplifting sight of these intelligent creatures has delighted marine enthusiasts and coastal communities alike.
