Quick Smiles:

  • Officer Jonathan Cox helped a woman struggling with yardwork on a sweltering day.
  • He spent two days transforming her overgrown property after his shift.
  • An unlikely friendship blossomed, with Dory Oliver calling him her ‘adopted grandson.’

On a scorching summer day in Wyandotte, Michigan, Officer Jonathan Cox noticed Dory Oliver mowing her lawn with one hand and steadying herself with a walker in the other.

Dory explained to Officer Cox that yard work had become nearly impossible due to mobility issues, and despite reaching out for help, no one showed up.

“When you’ve worked all your life… and then, suddenly, you can’t, it’s not a good feeling,” Oliver said.

Cox assured Dory he would take care of it and, after his shift, returned alone to tackle the yard, which was overgrown with storm debris and needed a lot of attention.

Over two days, Cox cleaned up the yard, leaving Dory deeply touched by his generous spirit.

“What a blessing it was – not only professionally, he would be there for me if I needed him but just out of the kindness of his own heart and the willingness to help someone,” Dory shared.

She showed her appreciation by thanking the police chief and bringing donuts by the station.

“I’m just still in awe of what he did for me. He doesn’t even know me. He just took care of what was impossible for me because I can’t walk without the walker. I just have to commend him, and I thank him so much.”

Cox, a dedicated officer, humbly stated, “I’m very blessed in the position where I’m at, whether it’s personally and/or professionally, to help others.”

The experience brought them closer, with Dory saying, “I didn’t know this young man at the time, and now, he’s my adopted grandson.”

Cox intends to continue helping her in the future, showing true community spirit.

Stories like this remind us of the big difference kindness makes every day. Don’t forget to share a smile today!
