Oldest U.S. Organ Donor Inspires Hope for Lifesaving Transplants

Published

on

Just two hours after Dale Steele passed away at the age of 100, his family received a phone call that changed a stranger’s life. Despite his age, Dale became the oldest organ donor in U.S. history when his healthy liver was successfully transplanted.

The incredible gift was possible because the liver constantly regenerates, meaning its functional age is often only a few years old. Officials hope this milestone encourages everyone to register regardless of their age.

One of the myths we hear in the community is that people are too old to be organ donors. This story shows there is no age limit for giving life.

Dale was a WWII veteran and cattle rancher who lived a century defined by hard work and quiet generosity. He remained active throughout his life and celebrated 72 years of marriage with his wife, Doris.

We consented without any hesitation, his son Roger explained. We knew Dale would have wanted to help someone else if he could.

Quick Smiles:

  • The human liver constantly replaces cells, making it functionally young even in centenarians.
  • Dale served his country in Europe during WWII before returning to Nebraska as a rancher.
  • More than 100,000 Americans are currently waiting for life-saving organ transplants.

Help spread the word about organ donation by sharing this incredible story of a life that continues to give. Your choice to become a donor can provide hope to families in need.
