Parakeet’s 100-Mile Adventure Ends in Joyful Reunion

Quick Smiles:
- A family’s parakeet, Rambi, was found over 100 miles from home after a surprise escape.
- The bird’s journey from London to Dorset remains a delightful mystery.
- Community efforts and a lucky encounter led to Rambi’s safe return.
In a tale reminiscent of a whimsical adventure story, a cherished Alexandrine parakeet named Rambi was reunited with his family after an unexpected journey over 100 miles from his London home to Dorset, England.
Rambi, a vibrant green parakeet who had never ventured beyond the confines of his home, decided to take flight during a family barbecue when his cage was inadvertently left open. The family, led by Yianoulla Evangelou, immediately launched a full-scale search operation throughout their neighborhood.
“Because he’s never really flown before—other than around the house—we thought he’d be nearby,” explained Evangelou, reflecting on the initial search efforts.
Despite their exhaustive attempts, which included knocking on doors, putting up posters, and contacting local vets and pet shops, Rambi remained elusive. Weeks went by until a surprising call came from an animal charity near Bournemouth, alerting them to a parakeet that matched Rambi’s description.
The charity was initially skeptical, even after the ankle tag number confirmed Rambi’s identity. “It’s a miracle,” Evangelou expressed.
“We’re so happy now that Rambi’s back. It’s just so amazing.” The family was left pondering how their domestic bird managed to traverse such a distance. A possible theory is that Rambi might have hitched a ride on a vehicle, possibly spurred by construction noise during the barbecue.
Rambi’s adventure took an unexpected turn when he landed on a woman’s shoulder in a Sainsbury’s car park. “We don’t understand how he got to where he did. He travelled over a hundred miles in the space of six days. That’s unheard of,” Evangelou remarked.
The woman who found Rambi was tempted to keep him but knew he had an owner. “The only way we will find out exactly what happened is if he tells us at some point—because he does talk,” Evangelou joked.
The family drove over two-and-a-half hours to retrieve Rambi, a journey filled with anticipation and relief. “It was the best feeling in the world. We thought he was gone forever,” Evangelou shared.
The community’s support was overwhelming, with people even searching parks at night. This heartening tale has inspired Evangelou’s sister, Sheniz, to consider writing a children’s book about Rambi’s escapade, aptly titled #BringRambiHome.
“He’s such a loving bird, and he loves to dance,” Sheniz noted, reflecting on the potential dangers Rambi faced. Yet, this story ends with joy and gratitude, a testament to the power of community and serendipity.
