Quick Smiles:

  • Parents carry baby with fatal diagnosis to term, choosing organ donation.
  • Baby Haven inspired doctors and family with her strength and presence.
  • Her donations are helping other children and patients in need.

At a routine appointment during her pregnancy, Catherine Mornhineway and her partner, Andrew Ford, learned that their unborn daughter, Haven, had a rare and fatal condition called anencephaly. The heartbreaking diagnosis quickly turned into a journey of courage, love, and hope as they explored ways to honor their daughter’s life.

“Our hearts dropped. They said there was nothing to be done. Most people terminate.”

Instead of giving up, they found inspiration in a story about organ donation and wondered if the same was possible for Haven. Andrew needed time to process the idea, but together, they decided that creating meaning from their loss felt right.

“I remember thinking that our devastation could become something beautiful,” Ford shared.

With support from their care team and LifeLink, the family understood the challenges ahead, as organ donation in these cases is rare and complex. Even so, they remained hopeful and united by their love for Haven.

A sudden change in labor required a cesarean section for Haven’s safe arrival. To the amazement of everyone present, Haven was born crying and breathing on her own.

“She was perfect,” Andrew said.

Haven spent several precious days surrounded by her loving family. Her strength allowed her parents and siblings to share lasting moments, singing to her and saying goodbye. Her heart valves, corneas, and placenta were donated, bringing the hope of healing to other children and patients in need.

Conversations around Haven’s story with her siblings were handled with warmth, honesty, and love, giving each child a chance to connect with their baby sister in their own way.

“We wanted them to know her,” Mornhineway explained. “Even if it was just for a little while.”

In the face of heartbreak, this family’s decision brought comfort, light, and new beginnings for others, proving that hope and love can shine through even the most difficult moments.
