Peanut Patch Therapy Helps Toddlers Build Tolerance

Quick Smiles:

  • Peanut allergy risks were reduced in toddlers using a skin patch.
  • After 3 years, over 70% tolerated 3 or 4 peanut kernels.
  • Treatment showed strong safety with only minor, decreasing side effects.

Toddlers developed a tolerance to peanut proteins thanks to a skin patch treatment that could help prevent dangerous allergic reactions. Over three years, more than 70% of participants could safely tolerate the equivalent of 3 or 4 peanut kernels, offering hope to families dealing with peanut allergies.

The treatment, known as epicutaneous immunotherapy (EPIT), uses the Viaskin Peanut Patch to introduce small amounts of peanut protein through the skin. This approach aims to teach the immune system to safely handle peanut exposure and reduce the chance of severe reactions from accidental ingestion.

Researchers analyzed toddlers who switched from a placebo to the peanut patch, observing significant improvements in peanut tolerance over the three-year period. Nearly half of the children in the study eventually tolerated even higher amounts, with milder reactions seen during food challenges.

“Importantly, the treatment continued to show a strong safety record,” said Dr. Matthew Greenhawt, the study’s lead author. “No cases of treatment-related anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, were reported in the third year.”

Skin irritation at the site of the patch, the most common side effect, became less frequent as time went on. Findings presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology reflect the promise of early intervention for changing the course of peanut allergies in young children.

Experts urge that parents consult a qualified allergist before considering any treatment, as professional guidance is essential to safety. Hope shines for parents, as this therapy might one day offer peace of mind for families managing peanut allergies.
