Polar Bear Shows Heartwarming Act of Adoption

Quick Smiles:

  • Rare footage shows a wild polar bear mom adopting a cub that’s not her own in Canada.
  • This marks only the 13th known adoption in over 45 years of tracking polar bears in Western Hudson Bay.
  • Adopted cubs have a much better chance at survival with a mother by their side.

During the annual migration in Manitoba, scientists captured a rare moment: a female polar bear caring for an adopted cub.

This gentle display contrasts with the species’ reputation for fierce behavior and highlights the powerful maternal instincts among bears.

“Throughout over 45 years of tracking more than 4,600 individual polar bears in this Western Hudson Bay subpopulation, this is the 13th known case of adoption,” said Dr. Evan Richardson, polar bear research scientist.

Researchers noticed the bear, known as X33991, emerged from her den in spring with one cub and was later seen with two — one was untagged and believed to be adopted.

Samples are being analyzed to trace the origins of the adopted cub and possibly identify its biological mother.

Adoption may occur even when the birth mother is alive, sometimes due to “switching litters.” This intriguing phenomenon has allowed several adopted cubs to reach adulthood.
