Police officer adopts little girl he saved from abuse and ‘tugged’ at his heart
- Police Officers Brian Zach and his partner were called to check the house of a little girl who was abused.
- Officer Zach’s heart went out to the little girl and told his wife he wanted her to be a part of their family.
- After 30 months, Kaila the little girl, has been officially adopted by the Zach family.
Police Officers experience a myriad of situations and emotions on and off duty. But one officer’s compassion for a little girl would lead him to make her a part of his family.
In March 2018, Patrol Sergeant Brian Zach of the Kingman Police Department and his partner were called to check the residence of Kaila.
Kaila was a victim of abuse and that night, Zach said, “We colored, we snacked … she held my hand and she was just this cute little thing. Once detectives came, they picked her up and took her to the hospital.”
As a result of physical abuse, Kaila was treated for multiple injuries. Charges were filed against her caretakers.
Zach could not take his mind off the child as he is a father to two other children. He told his wife that he wanted Kaila to come live with them.
When child protective services could not immediately place Kaila, he and his wife Cierra stepped in.
Zach said, “We lived each week not knowing if she was going to go back to her biological parents, or how long we were going to keep her. Our goal was to love and care for this little girl for as long as it happened.”
After 30 months, the Zachs finally got the go signal to adopt 4-year-old Kaila at the Mohave County Superior Court in Lake Havasu City, last August 18.
Kaila is now part of the Zachs together with older children, Raina, 19 and Trevin, 17.
Zach said, “Within the second day she was calling my wife ‘mom’ or ‘mommy. I was ‘guy’ for a week or two and then when she started pre-school, she learned who dad was.”
Kaila has now transformed into a comical and witty girl who enjoys preschool, make-believe play, dancing, and animals.
The adoption has made Kingman Police Department’s chief of police Rusty Cooper proud and thankful that Brian Zach and his family are part of the Kingman Police Department.
He said, “Lt. Brian Zach’s commitment to public safety is exemplified in his commitment and love for Kaila. Both Brian and his wife Cierra are amazing parents.”
“They are committed to the service of others and a cause that is greater than themselves. ”
