Meet Baxter, the tiny terrier-chihuahua mix, who’s melting hearts across the internet with his display of gratitude towards his new mom, Ava Rose Madarieta.

Our furry hero was adopted by Madarieta from Palm Springs Animal Shelter, and Baxter was quick to settle into his new loving environment.

“When we got him home Baxter immediately followed me everywhere. When I laid down to play with him I noticed he wanted to be very close to my face, not only that, but he seemed very content being next to me or placing his paw on me,” said Madarieta.

Originally brought in as a stray, Baxter was reported to be nervous around people and had a rocky start with previous homes.

However, his insecurities melted away with Madarieta’s gentle and loving approach.

She reveals, “I was very gentle and loving with him which I think gave him some comfort.”

In a heartwarming TikTok video that’s clocked up a whopping 2.3 million views, Baxter can be seen snuggling up to Madarieta, with one paw stretched across her face, as if to hold her close.

“Update on the shelter dog I got a couple of days ago,” Madarieta says in the video. “He has to have a paw on me at all times or put his face on me.”

Touched viewers couldn’t hold back their emotions, with comments pouring in.

“Oh my heart! The paw on you is his way of petting you back, or hugging you. He’s so grateful you saved him,” commented one user.

To this, Madarieta responded, “I’m so grateful for him.”

Rescue dogs like Baxter are reminders of the love and companionship that come with adopting a pet.

The Humane Society of the United States underlines this, reporting on their website, “Once adopted, pets from shelters and rescue groups typically cost less than pets purchased or even acquired for free when you add in the cost of vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, flea and tick treatment, and de-wormer included in your adoption fee.”

It was a match made in canine heaven for Madarieta, who admits, “Baxter instantly uplifted my life when I didn’t know that I needed it. I had been looking for a dog, but it was never the right dog or time. I knew what a big decision that adopting is, so I never wanted to force the decision.”
