  • Samsung joins BMW and Solid Power to bring advanced solid-state batteries to market.
  • These batteries promise a 600-mile range and can charge in just 9 minutes.
  • Lighter, safer, and longer-lasting, they’re set to debut in vehicles and devices by 2026.

Samsung is taking a major step forward in battery innovation through a new partnership with BMW and Solid Power, aiming to launch all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) that could transform electric vehicles.

With an impressive energy density of 500 watt-hours per kilogram, Samsung’s new batteries are twice as efficient as typical lithium-ion versions.

These advancements mean electric cars may soon travel up to 600 miles on a single charge and recharge in just 9 minutes, a huge leap over today’s standards.

“Samsung SDI’s preparations for mass-producing next-generation products of various form factors such as an all-solid-state battery are well underway as we are set to lead the global battery market with our unrivaled ‘super-gap’ technology,” said Samsung SDI CEO Yoon-ho Choi.

Thanks to their use of solid electrolytes, these batteries are not prone to catching fire, offer a lifespan of two decades or up to 1.2 million miles, and remain lightweight and compact.

BMW will use these batteries in their new evaluation vehicles by 2026, while smaller Samsung devices like the Galaxy Ring fitness tracker will also benefit from this technology.

The ASSBs make use of abundant silver for their anodes and a nickel-manganese-cobalt blend for the cathodes, boosting both performance and sustainability.
