Prepare for a heartwarming story of resilience and compassion as we share the moving tale of two senior German Shepherds, Ziggy and Bowie, who suddenly lost the world they knew. The tragic loss of their loving owner left them in an unfamiliar environment.
At the ages of 9 and 10, Ziggy and Bowie should have been living out their twilight years in the comfort of their peaceful home. However, the sudden loss of their owner led them to a shelter, where they found themselves confused and mourning their beloved human.
From reports from the Westside German Shepherd Rescue of Los Angeles (WGSR), the pair’s owner passed away unexpectedly in her home, where she was also caring for four other dogs. It took an agonizing five days before the woman and her faithful companions were discovered. Despite the harrowing ordeal, all six dogs survived.
Once found, the four foster dogs were returned to their respective homes. Ziggy and Bowie, however, were left without a family. Due to Ziggy’s previous adoption from WGSR, the dogs’ plight immediately drew their attention.
Upon learning of the situation, WGSR swiftly acted to rescue Ziggy and couldn’t bear to leave Bowie behind. The organization shared their emotional journey on their Facebook page, pleading for donations for the medical care of both dogs, including surgery for Bowie.
They also voiced their concerns that in today’s society, young dogs are more desirable, potentially leaving Ziggy and Bowie with limited adoption prospects. They urged people to share the dogs’ story, stating that the dogs “just can’t spend their final years in a kennel”.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) identifies that senior pets are often overlooked in favor of younger animals in shelters, with older pets being last to be adopted and first to face euthanasia if practiced by the shelter. They, however, highlight the virtues of senior pets, known for their stable behavior and fully developed personalities.
In difficult times, the resilience and loyalty of our four-legged friends shine through. Stories like Ziggy and Bowie’s serve as reminders of the limitless potential of human compassion in providing love and care during times of need.
