Serena Williams recently opened up about her decision to use a GLP-1 medication to support her health after welcoming her second daughter. As a champion athlete and mother, Williams shared she has lost 31 pounds over the past year and feels her health has improved significantly.

“I was on and off (the medication) and now completely on,” she shared.

She explained how, despite her active lifestyle and trying various dietary changes, she struggled to manage her weight after pregnancy.

“As a woman, you go through different cycles in your life. … No matter what I did — running, walking, I would walk for hours because they say that’s good, I literally was playing a professional sport — and I could never go back to where I needed to be for my health. Then, after my second kid, it just even got harder. So then I was like, OK, I have to try something different.”

Williams also noticed positive changes beyond weight loss. During a recent doctor visit, she learned her blood sugar levels had improved, and she described feeling “lighter” and experiencing less discomfort in her knees.

“I had a lot of knee issues … especially after I had my kid (and) was never able to get to my normal levels of weight. And that, quite frankly, definitely had an effect on maybe some wins that I could have had in my career,” she recalled.

Williams happily reported not experiencing any side effects, and she feels grateful for the opportunity to regain her sense of well-being after having children.

“I put my body through a lot. … I understand that there are lots of side effects, I just didn’t have any,” she said.

The tennis star also mentioned the increased risk of diabetes within the African American community, making her health journey even more meaningful to her and her family.

“(It’s) definitely around in my family, and I really wanted to just look deeper,” she explained.

She hopes her story helps normalize GLP-1 medications as part of healthy living when needed. Williams believes it is not a shortcut, but a personal and thoughtful health decision.

“A misconception is that it’s a shortcut,” she noted. “As an athlete and as someone that has done everything, I just couldn’t get my weight to where I needed to be at a healthy place — and believe me, I don’t take shortcuts.”

Williams continues to champion feeling healthy and confident, inspiring others to be open about their own health journeys.
