Scientists have identified six new species of tube-nosed bats living in the Philippines’ protected forests, shining a light on the country’s impressive biodiversity.

This discovery raises the number of bat species in the Philippines to 85, demonstrating the area’s rich natural diversity just as Halloween approaches.

“I’m astonished at how much we still don’t know about the natural world, such as how many bat species there are,”

said Dr. Burton Lim, assistant curator of mammals at the Royal Ontario Museum.

Tiny and elusive, tube-nosed bats eat insects and rely on undisturbed forests for their survival.

“As a result, it’s deeply satisfying to see our collection make such an important contribution to Philippine biodiversity studies.”

said Professor Jodi Sedlock, a study co-author from Lawrence University.

The study, published in Zootaxa, includes bats named Murina alvarezi in memory of James Alvarez, a young bat biologist, and Murina baletei to honor esteemed scientist Danilo Balete.

To distinguish the new bats, the team examined their physical and genetic characteristics, including fur patterns and skull shape.

Bats hold a special place in folklore; in China and India, they are believed to bring good fortune, while Filipino legends feature mystical creatures inspired by bats.
