Teacher’s Keen Eye Sparks Life-Changing Diagnosis for Young Hudson

Quick Smiles:
- A preschool teacher’s keen observation led to a life-changing diagnosis for a young boy.
- Hudson’s early treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy was made possible by his teacher’s intervention.
- The family expresses immense gratitude for the teacher’s pivotal role in their son’s health journey.
During Teacher Appreciation Week, one preschool teacher in Arizona stands out as a beacon of vigilance and care. She noticed a subtle developmental anomaly in a little boy named Hudson, which led to early intervention for a serious condition.
Hudson’s teacher, Twyla Pobuda, observed that the young boy struggled with activities that typically come easily to children his age.
She noted, “Hudson would walk up to the classroom with a very large–gated, slow walk holding his mom’s or grandma’s hand for help.”
Her observations included Hudson using the Gower’s maneuver to stand up, a sign she recognized as unusual for a child of three to four years old.
“When getting up from the floor, sitting, or playing on the grass, he would have to get on all fours and push himself up with both of his hands, sometimes struggling to rotate his hips to a comfortable position to get up.”
Twyla’s decision to speak with Hudson’s parents about these motor skill struggles led them to seek a specialist’s opinion.
The outcome was a diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive disease that affects muscle function.
Hudson’s mother expressed deep gratitude, saying, “Mrs. Twyla is such a blessing to our family. Without her I truly believe Hudson would have gone undiagnosed for a while and we would not have been able to receive early interventions.”
Thanks to Twyla’s timely intervention, Hudson became one of the first children in the country to receive Elevidys, an FDA-approved gene therapy for Duchenne.
This treatment provided hope for Hudson’s future and emphasized the importance of early diagnosis.
“I truly believe that Mrs. Twyla was brought into our life for a specific reason, and she has changed the trajectory of Hudson’s life.”
The family had previously mentioned similar concerns to their pediatrician, but without Twyla’s insistence, they might not have pursued further evaluation.
“I was relieved to have an answer,” Twyla shared. “There surely was more to the plan for Hudson’s life and that was nothing but a miracle!”
Hudson’s story underscores the profound impact a dedicated teacher can have, reminding us all to cherish and appreciate those who nurture and guide the youngest among us.

Teachers are so important in so many ways and yet they are often undervalued and cetainlly underpaid. Two thumbs up to Twyla Pobuda.
