Texas Mom Welcomes Big Baby with Fitting Name

Markie Smith chose the name Canyon for her son early in pregnancy, simply because it felt right. When he was born via cesarean at Arlington Memorial Hospital, his size took everyone by surprise.

“There was this gasp and everyone just went, ‘Oh, my God,’ all at once,” Smith shared.

The proud mom described her newborn as reminding her of the Michelin Man, with “just rolls and rolls.” Canyon weighed 12 pounds, 10 1/2 ounces, much more than his siblings and well above the average baby weight.

“Canyon is the perfect name for him,” Smith said.

Family and friends quickly nicknamed him “the Grand Canyon” and “Super Cooper,” celebrating his remarkable size and his middle name. His nature-inspired name fits perfectly with siblings Meadow and Forest.

After a week in the NICU, Canyon was able to go home just in time for Christmas, bringing extra joy to his family. Smith feels grateful, calling him “the happiest, easiest baby.”
