The star of the video is a little birthday boy named Elijah, who suddenly realizes “how loved he is” in the midst of his birthday celebrations.

In the viral clip, 4-year-old Elijah is seen sitting at a table festively decorated with paper plates and napkins, his wide eyes locked on his enormous bowling ball birthday cake.

“Our adoption journey has been a long road,” Elijah’s mother, Abby Tiefel, told Newsweek. Elijah had been in foster care since he was 14 months old.

Tiefel shared that Elijah’s biological parents were inconsistent in his life due to personal challenges, but that didn’t deter her from providing him a loving home.

Tiefel recounted that after several months of inconsistency, the Department of Child Safety (DCS) decided to terminate the parental rights of Elijah’s biological parents.

However, the situation took a hopeful turn when Elijah’s biological mother asked Abby if she would be willing to do an open adoption.

Tiefel and her family agreed to this, and they continue to keep in touch with Elijah’s biological mother, who is now pursuing her college degree.

According to the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, there are 391,000 children living in the U.S. foster care system, with over 113,000 of them waiting almost three years on average for an adoptive family.

Describing the adoption journey as a “long and tough ride,” Tiefel encourages those considering adoption to “buckle up, regardless of whether your case ends in reunification or adoption.”

Her words serve as a poignant reminder of the challenges but also the rewarding moments that come with the process.

Sharing her experience with fostering and adoption, she shared, “We were lucky to be a part of three different outcomes since fostering.”

One child found their forever family, another was successfully reunited with his mother, and then there was Elijah, who they were privileged to adopt.

Tiefel highlighted that the goal should always be safe permanency for the child, “A safe, loving, permanent home.”

Viewers on TikTok were deeply moved by the clip.

It’s a gentle nudge to consider how we can make a difference in the lives of children longing for a safe and loving home.
