Quick Smiles:

  • Filing early could bring your refund sooner.
  • The IRS is modernizing with faster direct deposits.
  • Tax changes may mean bigger refunds for many.

Tax season is underway, and you could be in for a pleasant surprise if you qualify for a refund.

“If you paid more through the year than you owe in tax, you may get money back,” says the Internal Revenue Service.

To claim a refund, you need to file a tax return, and you have up to three years to do so.

“I like to file as soon as possible because you want to get that refund. And if there’s a problem, you want to find out right away,” shared Christine Romans, NBC News Senior Business Correspondent.

The 2025 tax filing season officially started January 26, and you have until April 15 to file, or until October 15 if you request an extension. The IRS expects about 164 million returns to be submitted.

Most refunds are sent within 21 days, according to the IRS, and direct deposit is encouraged as paper checks are being phased out.

To check your federal refund status, visit the IRS website and provide your information such as Social Security number, filing status, and refund amount.

If you’re tracking a state refund, the best resource is your state’s tax department.

If your refund is delayed, the IRS recommends using their online tools or calling their hotline at (800) 829-1954 after waiting the suggested period.

“Your refund may be delayed if your return needs corrections or extra review. If we need more information to process your return, we’ll send you a letter,” explains the IRS.

This year brings valuable changes: a $6,000 senior bonus, new deductions for car loans, tips, overtime, and an increase in the child tax credit. The standard deduction rises to $15,750 for singles and $31,500 for married couples filing jointly.

“Essentially that means that first $31,500 of your earnings for a couple is tax-free,” Romans added.

If you live in a high-tax state with an increased SALT cap, itemizing may have additional benefits this year, especially for property taxes or large deductible expenses.
