Chef’s Divine Sign Sparks 5,000 Daily Meals for Kids

Quick Smiles:
- A silver crucifix salvaged from ashes inspired Chef Serato to continue his mission.
- Caterina’s Club serves over 5,000 meals daily to children in need.
- Pope Francis’s encouragement fuels Serato’s dedication to feeding the hungry.
When a silver crucifix emerged unscathed from the ruins of Bruno Serato’s California restaurant, it was more than just a symbol; it was a divine message.
This powerful moment marked a turning point for Serato, who saw it as a sign to persevere and uphold his faith.
Since then, Serato has not only rebuilt his restaurant but has also expanded his mission to feed those in need.
In the vibrant city of Anaheim, his restaurant is a hub of generosity by night, serving the affluent, and by day, it transforms into a haven for the less fortunate.
Serato’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of a gift from Pope Francis.
This encounter with the Pope continues to inspire Serato, even after the pontiff’s passing.
Serato was honored as a hero in 2011 for his dedication to feeding underprivileged children.
His charity, Caterina’s Club, established in 2005, now provides free dinners to over 5,000 children daily across Orange and LA counties.
Each meal served at the elegant Anaheim White House restaurant supports a pasta meal for a child in need.
This charitable endeavor has earned Serato prestigious accolades, including the Ellis Island Heroes award, celebrating his contributions to his adopted country despite arriving with no English skills and only $200 to his name.
As Caterina’s Club approaches its 20th anniversary this October, it offers a moment to reflect on the milestones achieved and the challenges overcome.
“I was like, ‘No way!’” Serato exclaimed, recalling the firefighter’s return of the crucifix—a cherished gift from Pope Francis, whom he met four times.
On a memorable occasion, Pope Francis, after reviewing a small book of Serato’s work, encouraged him with “Bravo, bravo, continua cosi,” meaning “continue like this.”
Serato embraced this as both a command and a confirmation of his mission, feeling compelled to do more than ever to assist those in need.
“I have to keep doing what I’m doing, if I don’t he come down!” he humorously remarked.
His dedication is a fitting tribute to Pope Francis, who chose the name of Saint Francis of Assisi, known for his devotion to the poor.
Serato’s mission, inspired by a divine sign and papal encouragement, continues to bring smiles and sustenance to countless lives.
