Quick Smiles:

  • Firefighters and a clever tube save two baby hedgehogs from a storm drain.
  • Hedgehogs’ love for enclosed spaces leads to their rescue.
  • Both hedgehogs are safe and will soon return to the wild.

In the charming county of Warwickshire, a delightful rescue operation unfolded when two adventurous baby hedgehogs found themselves in a bit of a pickle.

Their cries for help echoed from a storm drain, prompting a call to the local hedgehog rescue charity.

Upon arrival, rescuers discovered the little hedgehogs had ventured four feet down into the drain, trapped in a narrow underground pipe.

Firefighters, ever resourceful, attempted to use a vacuum cleaner to lift the critters to safety, but the plan didn’t quite pan out.

Instead, an old plastic tube, originally a curtain rod, became the unexpected hero of the day.

After several tense moments, one of the hedgehogs curiously crawled into the tube, allowing rescuers to gently pull it up from the depths.

Sally Ellis, spokesperson for the Warwickshire Hedgehog Rescue, explained,

“The storm drain had been covered with chicken wire but the gaps were bigger than the hedgehog which had fallen down inside.”

She added,

“We alerted the fire service who tried to suck the hedgehog up with a hoover but that didn’t work. Eventually the woman’s son pushed a plastic curtain blind tube into the drain and the hedgehog was curious enough to get inside.”

The sibling hedgehog, found nearby, was also safely rescued.

Both hedgehogs were taken in by the animal charity, where they are currently thriving.

“Both hedgehogs are doing well and we look forward to releasing them back into the wild,” the charity shared.

This tale of hedgehog heroics reminds us of a similar story from another place, where quick-thinking first responders saved a young boy from a PVC drain pipe.

These stories highlight the importance of securing drain pipes to prevent such escapades.

In the end, the hedgehogs’ fondness for cozy spaces turned out to be their saving grace.

Their story is a gentle reminder to share the joy of these little creatures living to see another day.
