A Historic Salt Protest Ignited a Mass Movement for Independence

Steve Harris, bassist and songwriter for Iron Maiden, marks his 70th birthday as a music pioneer from East London. He crafts hits like Run to the Hills, produces albums, and leads a community soccer team while raising six children.

Born an architectural draftsman, Harris channels history into lyrics much like progressive rock icons. Two of his kids pursue music careers, and he cheers for West Ham United.

Ninety-six years ago, Mahatma Gandhi walked 240 miles to Dandi Beach, making salt to protest British taxes. This act swelled a non-violent movement, jailing over 80,000 and fueling India’s democracy.

Andrew Watson, from British Guiana, captained Scotland to triumphs over England and Wales 145 years ago. Hailed as football’s most influential Black player, he excelled with speed and tackling.
