Quick Smiles:

  • Bide Awhile Animal Shelter celebrates empty kennels as adoptions soar.
  • Pets are adopted within hours, with most finding families the same day they’re posted.
  • Even senior and special needs animals are being welcomed into loving homes right away.

The Bide Awhile Animal Shelter in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, is experiencing an incredible wave of adoptions, with dogs, cats, and kittens finding families faster than ever before. Adoptable pets are often matched with new homes within hours of being posted online.

“It’s wild to say it, but today we actually have no animals available for adoption,” said Sam Cole, the shelter’s communications and marketing coordinator.

Many animals are adopted the same day they’re listed, and even adult and senior pets are being quickly welcomed into families. Cole shared that this surge has continued nonstop since the start of the year, a joyful change from previous years.

In an effort to help older pets, the shelter provides foster incentives including medical coverage for senior animals. The increase in adoptions is being credited to more people recognizing the positive impact pets have on well-being and happiness.

With kennels and cages currently empty, staff are delighted knowing so many animals are enjoying new beginnings.
