Art Gallery Visits May Benefit Your Heart
Quick Smiles:
- Viewing art in a gallery can lower stress and inflammation.
- Study participants had reduced cortisol and key cytokines after 20 minutes with art.
- Enjoyable cultural experiences could help protect both mind and body.
A recent study found that taking time to appreciate art in person may lower your risk of heart disease and boost your immune system.
This effect comes from reducing stress hormones and inflammatory markers linked to aging and illness.
Researchers at King’s College London monitored participants as they explored the Courtauld Gallery, measuring heart rates, skin temperature, and saliva before and after the experience.
Compared to viewing replicas in a non-gallery setting, gallery visitors had cortisol levels fall by an average of 22%, with significant drops in inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-a as well.
“Stress hormones and inflammatory markers like cortisol, IL-6 and TNF-alpha are linked to a wide range of health problems, from heart disease and diabetes to anxiety and depression,” said Dr. Tony Woods, the lead researcher.
“The fact that viewing original art lowered these markers suggests that cultural experiences may play a real role in protecting both mind and body.”
The study encourages everyone to enjoy restorative experiences, whether through art or other leisure activities, as a simple way to support lifelong health.
Next time you feel stressed, a visit to a local art gallery could be just what your heart needs.
