Astronomers Uncover Unique Quadruple Star System

A team of astronomers from multiple countries has uncovered a remarkable quadruple star system containing not one, but two elusive brown dwarfs.
These unusual objects, known for resembling both stars and planets, offer valuable clues about how celestial bodies form.
Brown dwarfs are fascinating because they lack the mass and heat needed for sustained hydrogen fusion, causing them to cool and harden over time.
Locating even a single brown dwarf is difficult, so the team was thrilled to find two orbiting a pair of red dwarf stars in the same system.
The cosmic set, referred to as a “double-double,” is now a unique natural laboratory for researchers eager to learn more about these extraordinary objects.
Designated UPM J1040−3551 AabBab, the system lies 1,656 astronomical units from Earth, and the brown dwarfs in question are between 9 and 28 times the mass of Jupiter.
Both brown dwarfs orbit youthful red dwarf stars, which are among the universe’s most common and smallest stars.
With ages ranging from 300 million to 2 billion years, these stars present opportunities to explore the secrets of their formations.
The study hints that the limited material in the system might have led to the creation of both red and brown dwarfs, resulting in a rare configuration.
Supporting this idea, a past NASA survey reported that brown dwarfs are typically between 15 and 80 times the mass of Jupiter, while those here are much smaller.
The discovery utilized several cutting-edge telescopes, including Gaia, NASA’s WISE, and the SOAR telescope in Chile.
“This system offers a dual benefit for brown dwarf science,” said Adam Burgasser, an astrophysicist involved in the study.
“It can serve as an age benchmark to calibrate low-temperature atmosphere models and as a mass benchmark to test evolutionary models, if we can resolve the brown dwarf binary and track its orbit.”
