  • Pioneering UK startup extracts metals from e-waste using energy-saving solvents.
  • The new process avoids shipping and smelting, reducing emissions significantly.
  • Recovered gold is transformed into eco-friendly investment coins.

A UK-based startup is transforming recycling by extracting valuable metals like gold, cobalt, and copper from discarded electronics, bypassing traditional, energy-heavy smelting.

By applying a unique solvent at room temperature, circuit board plastics are separated, while the metals dissolve for easy collection with magnets.

This innovative approach not only aids recycling efforts but also plays a key role in securing essential resources for technology and defense needs.

Scott Butler, Executive Director of nonprofit Material Focus, shares,

“What you see with this pile of electricals is actually central to geopolitics at the moment… this is the future.”

Instead of exporting electronic waste to be burned and processed overseas, DEScycle’s method recovers metals within the UK, cutting down both transportation and emissions.

In 2024, the UN estimated that three-fourths of all global e-waste is not recycled, with billions in untapped natural resources still sitting in landfills.

As the Royal Mint launches a processing plant capable of reclaiming hundreds of kilograms of gold yearly from unwanted circuit boards, they choose to mint sustainable gold coins that back electronically traded funds—helping investors go green.

This inspiring shift in recycling demonstrates creative solutions for both environmental and economic growth, showing how innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.
