Cambodian Women Safeguard Their Precious Wetlands

In Cambodia’s Koh Kong province, Chan Kimcheng and other women are championing efforts to protect their community’s final freshwater pond and the biodiversity it supports. The area, once rich with wildlife and natural resources, now faces mounting threats from illegal activity, private development, and environmental changes.

By regularly patrolling the land, Kimcheng and her fellow campaigners are actively preserving their traditional way of life. These women are working toward secure land rights and fighting for a sustainable future for generations to come.

“It is rare to find collectively owned land with such rich natural resources,” Kimcheng said. “We must protect this place for future generations.”

The women have found strength in community networks, defying conventional roles and standing strong in the face of adversity. Cambodian photographer Sophal Neak observed, “She feels safer in the water than on the land,” capturing Kimcheng swimming in the safe embrace of the remaining pond.

Yung Chin, a fellow villager, shared, “In the past, we women didn’t engage in social work. Back then, I was too afraid to speak, terrified of making a mistake, but now I can confidently talk with senior management.”

Their courage is celebrated in the ActionAid exhibition, Women by Women, highlighting their vital leadership in environmental causes. Their story is a testament to resilience and the power of community-driven change.
