A class of first graders at Wallace Elementary in Kelso, Washington, was surprised when their winter hat art project took a heartwarming twist.

With help from her aunt, Amy LaFave, teacher Ashley Lowry transformed the children’s imaginative hat drawings into real, cozy hats—each one carefully sewn to match its creator’s vision.

LaFave said

“I didn’t realize 22 hats was going to take as long as it did, but we managed.”

“Some of them were very creative in their colors… they all turned out very unique.”

The reveal happened after recess, with students opening their desks to discover handcrafted hats just like their drawings, even matching their favorite colors and patterns.

“Because those are my favorite colors in the world.”

Another student shared

“It’s white because I like white and it’s my favorite color.”

For Lowry, the project was a way to inspire a love of learning and nurture pride and creativity in her students.
