Delta Dream Flight Inspires Future Aviation Leaders

Quick Smiles:

• Delta’s Dream Flight gives 100 Black teens a taste of aerospace careers.
• The all-Black flight crew encouraged students to dream big.
• Over 4,000 students have been inspired by the program since it began.

Delta’s Dream Flight program recently invited 100 Atlanta teens to embark on a journey designed to spark interest in aerospace careers. Students boarded a Boeing 757 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, where they met Black pilots and crew members serving as powerful role models.

“When I met my first Black pilot, that’s when I realized I could do it too,” said Delta captain Justin Mutawassim.

Seventeen-year-old Hayden Lynch, mentored by Mutawassim, shared how his passion for aviation took flight after receiving a drone for Christmas. Leading the trip was First Officer Dana Nelson, Delta’s trailblazing first Black woman pilot, supported by co-pilot Lyob Makonnen and an all-Black cabin team.

This year’s Dream Flight landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where students explored legendary rockets, shuttles, and learned from astronauts and aviators during an inspiring panel discussion.

The initiative, celebrating its 25th year, has guided thousands of young dreamers toward aviation and engineering careers. Many program alumni have gone on to work in piloting, aviation engineering, and aerospace.

“My dream is to become a Delta pilot one day—and inspire others just like they inspired me,” Hayden said.
