  • The experience leaves lasting awe and wonder for all involved.

A group of divers in Baja California Sur experienced an unforgettable moment when a Bryde’s whale suddenly surfaced during a lively fish feeding event in Mexico’s Pacific waters. Emily Marzilli, a free-diving instructor, was near a vast sardine bait ball when the whale emerged and took a giant bite before vanishing into the sea.

The sight left the divers stunned, turning a typical dive into an extraordinary and rare encounter. Magdalena Bay is famous for dramatic wildlife events, especially during sardine season when striped marlin and other predators gather.

“Out of nowhere, this Bryde’s whale came and just took a huge bite out of the baitball and just swam away.”

The Bryde’s whale belongs to the baleen family, sharing its lineage with blue whales and humpbacks and is known for its gentle feeding style. The divers kept a safe distance as marlin circled, and the bay momentarily erupted into a cloud of foam during the frenzy.

“Half of it was (spent) honestly in shock because you are expecting to see fish and then all of a sudden there’s this 20-30 ton whale that’s right in front of you.”

Once peace returned, the group looked at each other in disbelief, wondering if the extraordinary event truly happened. After the bait ball vanished and the excitement faded, the divers made their way back to the boat, carrying a magical memory.

“We had no idea that there was even a whale in the proximity,” she said.

“When the whale comes out of nowhere, it totally surprises you,” Marzilli said. “Those are interactions that you can only dream of and wish to happen.”
