Dog vs. Bear: Florida Porch Showdown Captures Online Attention
Quick Smiles:
- Unexpected standoff between a dog and a black bear captures online attention.
- Video of the encounter garners over 600,000 views on TikTok.
- Florida’s rising bear population leads to more human-wildlife interactions.
In a captivating moment straight out of a wildlife documentary, a Florida resident’s front porch became the stage for an unexpected standoff between her dog and a curious black bear.
The encounter, shared by Krista Greener from Naples, Florida, quickly took the internet by storm, amassing more than 600,000 views on TikTok.
Greener shared the video with an amused caption, “Was literally just about to walk out the door to go pick up the kids—Florida wildlife at its finest!”
In the video, her dog bravely stood its ground as the bear inspected the entrance.
Viewers were left both fascinated and anxious for the safety of Greener and her pet.
Comments poured in from around the world, with one viewer from Scotland, LuluLily2996, exclaiming: “I could NEVER live in an area where bears roamed freely, thank goodness I live in a wee Scottish town.”
Another user humorously added, “Me screaming lock the door the whole time,” while some took a lighter approach with jokes about the situation.
Julie_D quipped: “This distribution system is getting out of hand… I thought we were all getting cats,” and Virginia West added, “Ask the bear to pick the kids up.”
Florida’s black bear population, the only bear species in the state, has been on the rise, leading to more frequent encounters with humans.
Since the 1980s, both the bear and human populations have grown, with Florida’s residents increasing from 5 million in 1960 to over 20 million today.
As urban areas expand into previously remote locations, interactions between wildlife and humans have become more common.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the state is home to approximately 4,050 black bears.
These bears, primarily herbivorous, occasionally consume insects and small animals.
Adult males typically weigh between 250 and 350 pounds, while females are generally smaller, ranging from 130 to 180 pounds.
The FWC emphasizes that while the presence of bears is not inherently dangerous, they are wild animals deserving of respect.
Residents are reminded of the importance of not feeding bears and securing garbage, pet food, and bird seed to prevent unwanted encounters.

One of the reasons I would not live in Florida is the wildlife. Bears and alligators. The bear did not look aggressive, but as with the disclaimer above, you never know. And frankly, the idea of being stalked by an alligator is reason enough to live elsewhere!
